What and how to pack for an all-India cycle tour? The complete checklist.
Table of Contents
ToggleThere are two rules to bike packing:
- Pack less and pack only what you need.
- Don’t let the luggage weigh more than 25 Kg.
If you look up the internet, you will find that on average the luggage weight for a cycle tour is anywhere between 25 – 50 Kg. Anything above 25 Kg is an abysmal weight acting as a recipe for discomfort.
In the beginning, it may seem as though whatever you pack is too little for the journey. Don’t let your brain trick you into carrying too much. The reason for packing more is that we need comfort during our journey. However, no comfort equates to the comfort you get from riding pain-free. Heavy luggage is going to exhaust you in the long run making the whole experience a huge discomfort.
Finding the right gear in India is extremely hard as we do not have a cycle touring culture. The lightest tent we have available weighs 3.4 Kg. Over the past two years, I have done quite a bit of research to figure out the right gear and fit in all the luggage we need for an all-India tour to almost 20 Kg.
Here is my complete packing checklist.
Sleeping system
- Tent
- Sleeping bag
- Inflatable floor mat
- Pillow
As I mentioned earlier, the 2 person tent you will find at decathlon weighs 3.4 Kg. The trekking poles and the pegs which hold the framework of the entire tent and pin it to the ground are the biggest culprits. I noticed that the length of the tent is 5 meters because the trekking poles are folded to that length. I simply swapped the default tent poles with aluminium tent poles which are only 30 cm long and weigh far faaarr less! These poles are available at decathlon but are not of the right size and so require some bit of engineering. A hacksaw blade and a nail filer simply did the job for me. Next, I took to Amazon to buy some lightweight aluminium pegs and voila! The tent simply reduced from 3.4 Kg to 2.2 Kg and packed into a 30 cm space rather than 50.
The best outcome of reducing the size of the tent is that now I’m able to place it into a dry bag. This allows me to cycle even when it drizzles.

2 * convertible cargo pants
-
6 * compression underwear
-
6 * socks

1 * shoe pair and 1 * flipflop pair
-
Toothbrush, toothpaste, shower gel, clothes washing solution, nail cutter, shaver, roller deodorant, sweat powder, sunscreen, and moisturizer.
Make sure to buy only Marino wool t-shirts for the journey as these are sweat-resistant and don’t smell like the cotton ones. One of the beginner’s mistakes is to wear cotton wear on the journey. Also, invest in compression underwear so that chafing is avoided.
An ingenious way I figured out for washing clothes was by using a cheap dry bag. Pour half amount of water and detergent into it. Add the clothes and lock the top of the bag. Feel free to kick the bag around and stomp on it for a while. This bag acts as a manual washing machine! Open the bag and rinse out the soap water. Hang the clothes using bungee cords.
Cooking system
-
Petrol stove
-
Utensils
-
Aluminium windscreen
-
Lighter
-
Spork
-
Food and ready-to-eat supplies
The only available petrol stove on Amazon is the BRS multi-fuel camping stove. It can hold up to 450 ml petrol which lasts for good 2 hours in medium flame. Make sure to have a spare bottle in which you keep replenishing petrol. The petrol will also allow you to start a campfire wherever necessary.
Bike spares
-
Allen key set with chain tool
-
Plier for holding cables in place (multipurpose hammer for pitching the tent pegs)
-
2 * spare tubes
-
Tyre puncture repair kit
-
Spare rear derailleur hanger
-
Small pump
-
Extra spokes and cables
-
Chain linker
-
Degreasser, brush, cleaning cloth, and lubricant
-
Helmet
To understand cycle maintenance and service during travel, read this blog: How to service, maintain, and fix my cycle breakdown on an all-India tour? I. Am carrying a small bottle of degreaser. But this is not necessary. Cloth washing solution should also do the job of cleaning the drivetrain.
Electronics
-
iPad
-
GoPro
-
GoPro mounts with one spare battery and multiple battery charger
-
1 * 10 TB harddisk
-
1 * 20000 mAh power bank
-
Chargers for phone, GoPro, and iPad.
-
Extension cord with at least three plug points
-
Solar panel
Nome of the above electronic gadgets is necessary. However, make sure to carry a power bank and an extension cord which allows you to charge multiple devices on the go at hotels, petrol stations, and tea shops. You don’t want to be limited by just one plug point. One practice that I am following is to have the solar panel constantly plugged in to keep the power bank charging throughout the day. This will help if you are carrying multiple devices.
Medicines
Make sure to carry the first aid kit and the medicines necessary for common illnesses. I have already made a list of the same in this blog: How can I plan a safe all-India cycle tour?
Miscellaneous
- Bug spray to avoid mosquitos from entering the tent
- Pepper spray for safety
- Bungee ropes to tie the luggage together and hang clothes where necessary
- Extra tent poles for fixing in case of breakage
- 1 * notebook + pen
- Zip ties, scissors, duck tape, zip lock covers, safety pins, needle and thread
On the bike
- Tarpaulin which acts as the base layer for the tent and also a cover for the bike when it rains
- Odometer, front, and rear lights
- Water bottles
- Tube lock
- Saddle bag with Allen key, levers, and a spare tube which is accessible when faced with a flat tyre.
- Tripod for quick access
The gear you have to invest in might make you feel that cycle touring is an expensive affair. To know how much it may cost for an all-India tour on a cycle, read this blog: How much does it cost to tour India on a cycle?
I am a 31 year young PhD graduate who has decided to travel the length and breadth of India on my cycle, to document the journey of meeting a vast array of people. In my journey, I intend to understand the characteristic features of the people of this nation and categorize them based on their demographics, age, profession, gender, traditions, and cultural differences.
