During my extensive cycling tour across India, I had the privilege of crossing paths with Mr. Kamal Sharma, the mastermind behind the YouTube channel known as KP History Official. With an impressive subscriber count of 1.38 lakh and a dedicated team of four professionals committed to creating captivating videos, Kamal offered me invaluable insights into the intricate world of ghost hunting and the meticulous efforts that fuel this fascinating endeavor.

How does one decide to become a professional Ghost hunter shooting videos for YouTube?

Kamal, a 28-year-old hailing from the Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan, discovered his passion for photography during his 10th-grade schooling. As he honed his photography skills, he ventured into opening his own photography shop in 2015 while in the final year of his BA studies. In 2017, inspired by a friend who found success on YouTube covering songs in his studio, Kamal realized the potential for substantial earnings on the platform. Intrigued by the prospect, he decided to start his own channel.

Given his proficiency in video shooting and camera skills acquired from his experience with short films, Kamal contemplated the type of content he wanted for his channel. Eventually, he settled on creating comedy videos in collaboration with a talented friend. Within just four months of launching the channel, he successfully monetized it, and by the fifth month, he was making around 7,000 rupees. His earnings rapidly grew, reaching up to a lakh by 2021 before the onset of the first COVID-19 lockdown in the country. During this break, he took some time away from YouTube.

However, Kamal’s breakthrough came during the Ulli festival in Rajasthan on March 31, 2021, when he encountered a tantric ritual being performed in the middle of the road late at night. Recognizing an opportunity, he made a YouTube video in which he dared to eat the offerings placed on the road, challenging fate. This video garnered 500 to 700 views and led to viewers challenging him to undertake various tasks, which he embraced for entertainment value. This newfound interest fueled his desire to create more such videos.

As the channel’s content evolved, the number of subscribers fluctuated, with a notable drop at one point. Nevertheless, Kamal’s passion for shooting haunted videos drew him into a new genre, reigniting his creative journey on YouTube.

Are ghost hunting videos real or fake?

Ever since I met Kamal, a persistent question lingered in my mind: Were his videos staged or authentic? Kamal openly admitted that when he first began creating content, it was primarily for entertainment purposes. As a newcomer to the genre, he often orchestrated many of the events depicted on screen. However, a turning point arrived when a well-known YouTube channel called AN Reaction debunked their content, leaving Kamal feeling embarrassed and motivated to produce genuine videos.

Following this debunking, Kamal assembled a team of four individuals who would share the earnings from his YouTube channel equally. They started visiting locations reputed to be haunted, with Kamal asserting that approximately 2 out of every 10 places they investigated did indeed exhibit paranormal activity. He showcased many videos shot over the past few years where he claimed these events were not staged. Kamal explained that there came a point when they all began wearing rudraksh beads and other holy threads for protection, a practice he continues to this day. Whenever they received a challenge, the team would embark on location visits to capture the eerie occurrences.

However, after a year and a half of intense shooting, a series of unfortunate events unfolded. One team member fell seriously ill after a spirit supposedly entered his body, and another nearly lost a leg. These incidents led to their departure from the team, leaving Kamal to continue making videos with only one remaining team member behind the camera.

On February 17, 2022, a pivotal moment occurred when they accepted a challenge to make a video at a location where Kamal was asked to remove the protective holy threads and rudraksh beads. Kamal described this experience as the most unsettling of his entire haunted video career. He recounted losing control that day, banging his head against a gate, and bleeding profusely, even showing me the scars from that injury during our conversation. This incident prompted a 15-day hiatus from video production, after which the two remaining members decided to call it quits. Finally, on September 30th, 2022, Kamal decided to end his haunted video journey on YouTube.

Mindset of the individual who runs ghost hunting channel on YouTube

Listening to all of Kamal’s stories left me somewhat torn between believing his eerie tales or not. Kamal informed me that he had unequivocally decided to put an end to creating haunted videos and was now eager to channel his skills into vlogging content on YouTube. He mentioned that he possessed all the photography equipment needed for wedding photoshoots, a field where he could earn a month’s worth of income from just two weddings. Kamal expressed his intent to embark on frequent travels, documenting his journeys in the form of travel vlogs on a completely new YouTube channel, starting from scratch. The experiences he encountered along his haunted video journey had transformed him, instilling the confidence to venture anywhere at any time in his life. His once-present fear of malevolent spirits had dissipated. Curious to understand more about the person behind these stories, I delved into some personal questions.

Justification

During my conversation with Kamal, one question that puzzled me was why he was running the YouTube channel and why he intended to persist with it. The straightforward answer might have been to make a livelihood from it, especially considering his family’s ownership of two travel buses and the income he derived from wedding photoshoots. However, Kamal’s perspective diverged. He emphasized that money is inherently unpredictable, flowing in and out, but what held greater importance for him was “face value.” His motivation to create videos stemmed from the desire to establish a prominent personal brand, where his name alone becomes synonymous with recognition in the eyes of the public.

Validation

When I inquired about whose validation mattered the most to him, Kamal revealed that his foremost desire was to be recognized and appreciated in his mother’s eyes. Despite the pursuit of public recognition, he placed his mother’s validation above all else, emphasizing that his greatest happiness would come from knowing that she is content.

Complaints

Interestingly, Kamal’s response differed from many others I had posed this question to. When I inquired about his biggest complaints, Kamal simply stated that he had none. He went on to express his hope that God would grant him what he rightfully deserves in return for his dedication and hard work.

Materialism

When questioned about his reaction to receiving a significant sum of money, Kamal conveyed his desire to explore new places and embrace life in novel ways, all while extending a helping hand to friends and family.
